Your questions answered

The scholarship portal opens the majority of applications on November 1 annually. Deadlines vary by scholarship and are posted within the application.

We highly recommend you to read the questions and answers in this section before you apply for a scholarship or contact us for support.

If you have more questions, feel free to reach out via email at [email protected] or call our main office at 785-734-2406.

Can I send a physical application as opposed to an online one?

No, all applications must be completed online. Paper copies are not accepted.

How will I know if I'm eligible?

Applicants will be required to complete an eligibility quiz at first logon to determine which scholarships they are eligible to apply. If you do not see a scholarship listed for which you believe you qualified, contact our scholarship department.

Can I use my high school email address?

NO, do NOT use your high school email address.  The email address used in the application will be the primary contact method throughout college if you receive a scholarship award.  If needed, create a personal email account in gmail, yahoo, etc. for permanent personal use.

What are the requirements for references?

Some scholarships require reference letters. You should contact and confirm that that your references are willing to provide a POSITIVE reference before you list them as a reference. You will need their email address to enter into the application. Let them know that they should receive an email from GNWKCF with instructions to provide a confidential reference. It is your responsibility to ensure your references respond.

How should I approach my answers?

Let your personality shine and be thorough in your answers.  Your responses are key to the award selection process.

How will I know if I am awarded a scholarship?

Typically, high school students will be notified through your local awards program or at graduation; however, some may receive an email. College students will be notified via email. We do not notify students who are not selected.

What happens if I am awarded a scholarship?

Once you are awarded a scholarship, you must login to the scholarship portal to complete the required follow up. (Printable directions - click HERE.) Before the first scholarship payment can be released, you must:

  1. Accept the scholarship agreement.
  2. Provide a copy of your upcoming course schedule that includes: Your name, the school's name, and the total number of credit hours for which you are enrolled.

What if my scholarship is for multiple semesters?

If your scholarship is for multiple semesters, at the end of each semester you will need to login to the scholarship portal to provide your current cumulative GPA and upcoming course schedule (showing your name, the schools name, and total credit hours enrolled) before the next scholarship payment can be released.

What happens if I fail to meet the minimum scholarship criteria?

GNWKCF ensures each scholarship fund establishing documents are carefully followed. Students must meet the minimum scholarship criteria at the time of enrollment. If your scholarship is for more than one semester and you fail to meet the minimum requirements for renewal, you will be given a one semester probation period to improve your eligibility. If, at the end of the probation period, you still do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements, you will forfeit your scholarship.

What happens if I fail to complete the follow up steps?

Failure to complete the follow up steps may result in forfeit of your scholarship.

How is my scholarship award paid?

All scholarship awards are made payable to the post-secondary education institution that you state on your follow up form. We do not issue payments until after July 1 annually for Fall Semesters (January 1 for Spring Semesters), and we will not release payment until your follow up is received. Payments are generally sent to the student financial aid office approximately 10-15 days AFTER you submit all of the required follow up forms to accept your scholarship.

What happens to my scholarship if I need to take a semester off?

If you notify GNWKCF in writing prior to the start of the semester you plan to miss, we can grant a one semester deferral. If you do not notify GNWKCF prior to the start of that semester, you risk forfeiting your scholarship.
